Zapco ASP-X2 dual-band electronic crossover
The vast majority of today's amplifiers have built-in crossovers. However, these are designed mainly for comfort, not for sound. An audiophile crossover would be too big and too expensive to build into an amp. With a built-in crossover, you change the sound to comfort, and Zapco electronic crossovers are there for all those who do not want to accept this fact. Zapco crossovers are designed to provide the best possible sound quality and versatility needed for the most advanced sound systems.
The Zapco ASP-2X is a highly versatile 2-way crossover with separate front and rear inputs. Like the ASP-4X, the ASP-2X was originally designed to complement the new LX models of Zapco's Z-series amplifiers. The LXs are no-compromise and have no preamplifier features other than input sensitivity. To meet the standards of an amplifier such as the LE/LX series, a special crossover is required, and the ASP-2X is just that special crossover. For starters, the ASP-2X (as in other Zapco processors) uses the exact same high-end Elna Silmic II capacitors and OP275 op amps used in the ASP-4X. Another important element affecting the sound is the quality of the drivers. It must be clean, accurate and must not add distortion. Zapco became the manufacturer of the best controllers because no other supplier could meet Zapco's demands.
Finally, all the versatility of Zapco has been built in. With two high-pass filters and a low-pass filter, the 2X is a very unusual 2-band crossover. Like most 2-band crossovers, the ASP-2X can be used to separate the bass signal from the mids and treble signals. But adding an X10 switch on each filter allows the high pass to reach up to 4500 Hz, so the ASP-2X can be used with an active tweeter. At the other end, X10 switches on the second output allow the low-pass filter and the subsonic filter to become high-pass filters. So the ASP-2X can give you an active tweeter and a pass-through midrange. And with the dual input system, you can switch between the two outputs. If you set the bandpass to the widest, you can have a front highpass with backfill and crossfading.
